THE CLIMATE
Although La Rioja Designation of Origin enjoys a continental climate, it is also subject to the influences of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, which make for ideal grape growing conditions, offering mild temperatures and sufficient rainfall.

Here, the latitude and relief of the land are the determining factors. We shall now go on to describe the characteristics of the climate that is specific to each particular sub-region:

- Southern Rioja Alta. This is an area with less precipitation than in the north and with a marked continental influence. Limestone - clay soils in the north alternate with ferrous soils to be found at Fuenmayor, Navarrete or Nájera. The altitude also rises towards the south, which blurs the classification somewhat.

- Rioja Alavesa and Sonsierra. The proximity of the Sierra de Cantabria, serving as a barrier between the Atlantic and continental climates, means that this sub-region is more exposed to the Atlantic climate, a fact which has considerable influence on the acidity of the wines. Less sun implies greater acidity, an essential characteristic for wine ageing. At the same time, the marked contrast between temperatures during the day and night time, as a result of the altitude and its location in the interior of the peninsular, brings aromatic richness to the wines.

- Finally, the Rioja Baja. With the majority of the vineyards at a lower altitude (with notable exceptions, such as some of our estates) and a greater number of sunshine hours, this is the region most influenced by the Mediterranean, providing wines with a high alcohol content and extract. This explains why the Garnacha is the predominant grape, although the Tempranillo also grows perfectly well here. Likewise, the influence of the Mediterranean can also be appreciated in the eastern part of the Rioja Alavesa.
